The Tanschule is a landscape of rooves, a topological allusion to the plasticity of the existing buildings.
Project?
The program aims to develop a dance school made up of five studios, including a Ball Hall and spaces for a restaurant, bar and vestibule, which confers a public character to the buildidng.
The constrained plot is situated in Zürich, south of the Römerhofplatz, flanked by nineteenth century buildings. The site is ambiguous by nature, made up of a square dominated by a neoclassical building and an intersection to the north, and held by two imposing residential buildings to the east.
The Tanschule (dance school) is a landscape of rooves, a topological allusion to the plasticity of the existing buildings.
The rooves are designed to host the studios, bathed in undirect natural light and optimal for the practice of dancing.
The Northern façade overlooks onto the square, whilst also offering a pivot to the intersection, as a head in dialogue with the angles of the existing buildings. This façade is blind, only opened by a large loggia, while South façade is more domestic and includes balconies and recesses.
The zoomorphic character of the building suggests a body and a head, envelopped by a prefab concrete shell, of which mineral aspect integrates well in the Zürich context.
The public reaches the Foyer and Ball Hall from the head of the building, while the dancers reach the studios and changing rooms from the school's body.
The suspended studios are structural and hold together cores that contain technical equipment : form, structure and program are interdependent.
